Getting clear answers about your own health has become more complicated than it should be.
You schedule a physical.
Your doctor orders a standard panel.
A few days later, someone calls to say everything looks normal.
And yet you still feel tired.
Or foggy.
Or just not quite right.
For many people, that experience is familiar. True preventative medicine requires understanding how your body is functioning before problems develop; uncovering underlying conditions. Standard lab panels ordered through a primary care visit are designed to diagnose illness, not to give you that fuller picture.
Comprehensive preventive testing is not always covered by insurance without a specific diagnosis, which means many valuable markers simply are not included in a routine visit.
The gap between “normal” and actually feeling well
Many of the markers that matter most for how you feel day to day require specific tests that go beyond a standard annual panel.
For example:
- A TSH within range does not tell you how well your thyroid hormones are being converted and used
- A basic metabolic panel does not tell you your magnesium, vitamin D, or iron status
- If vitamin D does get tested, the “normal” range is far below what functional medicine determines as optimal for hormone health, immune health, and inflammation
- Total cholesterol does not tell you your particle size, your Lipoprotein(a), or your inflammatory cardiovascular risk
The information is available. The challenge is knowing which tests to order, how to interpret the results, and what to do with them once you have them.
The problem with raw data and no guidance
Services that allow patients to order their own labs directly have made bloodwork more accessible. But accessibility without context has its own limitations.
Receiving a report full of numbers and reference ranges without clinical interpretation can be confusing at best and anxiety-inducing at worst. Knowing your ferritin is low or your reverse T3 is elevated means very little without understanding what is driving it, how it connects to your symptoms, and what to do next.
This is where working with a provider who understands functional medicine makes all the difference. The labs are only part of the picture. The interpretation, the context, and the plan that follows are what actually move the needle on how you feel.

How it works at ATH
Getting comprehensive bloodwork through Austin Transformational Health starts with a conversation, not a lab order.
Dr. Bryn takes the time to understand your symptoms, your history, and your health goals before deciding which panel is right for you. Most people do not know which biomarkers are relevant to their specific concerns, and they should not have to. That is exactly what the initial consultation is for.
Here is the process:
- Have an initial functional medicine consultation with Dr. Bryn
- Together, decide which panel best fits your health needs and concerns
- Receive your customized lab order to take with you
- Visit any LabCorp location for your blood draw and urine sample
- Results are returned within three to ten days depending on the panel
- Review your results with Dr. Bryn and leave with a clear plan
All panels are sourced through Evexia Diagnostics, a functional medicine lab network offering comprehensive testing beyond what standard labs typically provide. Every panel also includes a Functional Health Report with personalized supplement and lifestyle recommendations based on your results, so you leave with more than just numbers.
Why this approach makes financial sense
Insurance coverage for preventive bloodwork depends on having a documented clinical reason for each test ordered. For straightforward concerns like a known diagnosis or a specific symptom, coverage is often predictable. For proactive or comprehensive testing, it is not.
In fact, many patients discover that ordering through ATH costs the same as or less than paying out of pocket after insurance processes tests their provider had to justify ordering.
Better yet, the price is clear before you order, and no surprise bills follow.
